What was the Schlieffen plan
A plan put in place by German general Schlieffen who thought it would grant them a fast victory. The plan included:
- Almost entire German army focusing on Knocking out France
- Was to be done in 6 weeks before Russia joined the war ( that would split up the German army)
- Germany army go through defensless Belgium to suprise France
- Germany to storm Paris
What was Plan XVII
The french knew of Germanys Schieffen plan and had a plan of their own Plan XVII. This plan consisted of:
- France aiming to attack and re claim Alsace-Lorraine
- Then France would move to attack Berlin
- Germany army caught bewteen france in the west and Russia in the east would be crushed
- included Milltary assistance from Britian
What was the Arms Race
- A result of growing Nationlisn and Imperlisim
- Typically defined as a competeion of Military superiorty bewteen 2 places
- Germany wanted to expand their power and be equal to that of Britian
- Britian didnt like this
- This lead to both countries struggling for top power and finding ways to advance their system
- This lead to the Naval Race
Naval Race
- Britian needed a good navy since it had colonies all over the world but also cause Britian is surronded by water
- Britian Naval army was hugeee
- Germany wanted make their naval power as big as Britians, Britian felt threatend
- In response Britian tried to make their Naval even bigger and in 1906 created the Dreadnought
- BY 1914 Britian had 29 Dreadnoughts while Germany ahd 18
- Naval race was important because before this Britian and Germany had been homies, but now Britian became closer to its old rivals like France and Russia

June 28th - Archduke Ferdinad Assassinated in a Bosnian city by a Bosnian Serb natinonlist
July 23rd- Austria give Serbia a 48 hour ultimatum. Serbia doesnt agree and starts to moblize troops.
July 28th: Austria Hungary declares war on Serbia, Serbia turns to Russia
July 29th: Russia agrees to help Serbia/begins mobalizing
July 30th: Germany tells Russia to stop, Russia says no ( VIa ultimatum)
August 1: Germany declares war on Russia ( France Moblizes)
August 2: Germany invades Belgium to get to France
August 3: Germany declares war on France , Britian tells Germany to get outta Belgium ( via ultimatum)
August 4: Germany ignores Britian, Britian declares war on Germany( canada and other colonies roped into war, US is netural)

Why was there tension in the Balkains
- 1906 Austria Hungary took Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Turks, Serbia was pissed
- Serbia was pissed because those states had a large population of Serbs living in it , and the annexation cut Serbia off from the Adratic sea
-1912 A Balkain league was formed under Serbia leadership
- New league succeded in defeating the ottoman tirks and Austria Hungary begin to grow wary
-1913 another Balkain war broke out , Serbia got a lot bigger
- this leads to assaination, etc
