Firstly, you would put the slide in the straps. After that, you would use the 4x lens on the bottom of the scope. Then, you would turn the big adjustment knob to focus in on the item of the slide. When you are kind of focused in on the item on the slide, switch to the 10x lens on the bottom of the scope. After that, you would only use the small adjustment knob so you can focus on the item on the slide better (don't use the big adjustment knob because it will put the item/cell you are looking for out of focus).
