Electrolysis Is the breakdown of a compound using an electrical current
An electrical current is the result of a charged particle (proton , election ion) moving.
Solid ionic and prevalent compounds are not conductive as the charge can't move
Molten and acquiesce ionic compounds are conductive because the charge can move.
Graphite is caveant , but conduct electricity step because it has free electrons.
Hydrogen halides are covalent but in aqueous solution are ionic with positive and negative ions free to move.
Ammonia is caveolent , but in solution is ionic and can be electrolysed.
1. Connect two electrodes to a power supply.
2. Place the electrodes in the molten ionic substance
3.The positive ion (cation) will be attracted to the cathode and tbe negitivly charged ion (anion) will be attracted to the anode.
4.The cathode gives electrons do the cation making it neutral, producing pure molten metal. The anode takes electrons from the anion making it neutral producing a gas.
