To state the intention of a study

A hypothesis that makes a prediction on the difference between 2 variables
what is a non directional hyphothesis
A hypothesis that predicts there will be a difference between 2 variables in a study
What is the independant variable
The variable the researchers manipulate
What is the dependant variable
The variable which is predicted and measured
What are independant groups
A group in which different groups of participant takes part in each experimental condition
What are repeated measures?
Where the same participants are allocated to all groups
What are matched pairs?
Participants only take one test but are chosen for similar relevant characteristics or traits to other participants
What is an extreneous variable
Any variable other than the IV which might alter the results
What is a confounding variable
A confounding variable is a variable that has an unwanted effect on the dependant variable
What is social desirability bias?
A bias in participants behaviour when certain aspects of a study have to do with social norms
What are investigator effects
When a researcher unintentionally influences results of research they were conducting
What is randomisation used for?
To minimise the effect of straneous/confounding variables
