What is development?
The improvement of the standards of living of the people in a country.
What factors affect a country's level and speed of development?
Environmental, economic, social and political factors.
What is the development gap?
The difference in the standards of living between the world's richest and poorest countries.
State the ways of measuring development.
GNI per capita, birth rate, death rate, infant mortality, life expectancy, people per doctor, literacy rates, access to safe water and HDI.
Explain how useful birth rate is as a measure of development.
It is very reliable. In a HIC, it is lower due to women pursuing careers. In a LIC, it is higher due to the need for children to increase household income.
Explain how useful death rate is as a measure of development.
It isn't very reliable. In a HIC, the population will be older, meaning the death rate will be high. In a LIC, it will also be high due to bad healthcare.
Explain how useful infant mortality is as a measure of development.
It is a useful indicator of a country’s level of healthcare.
Explain how useful people per doctor is as a measure of development.
It shows how much money a country has invested in healthcare and high level education.
Explain how useful literacy rate is as a measure of development.
It is a useful indicator of a country's level of education.
Explain how useful access to safe water is as a measure of development.
It shows the level of infrastructure such as dams, reservoirs and water treatment plants in a country.
Explain how useful HDI is as a measure of development.
It is useful, as it is a combination of social and economic indicators, so it gives an idea of the QoL in a country.
What are the limitations of measures of development?
National average, outdated/hard to collect, unreliable sources, excludes the informal economy and government corruption.
What is the demographic transition model?
A model that shows change over time in the population of a country.
What is natural increase?
When the birth rate is higher than the death rate; and the population increases.
What is natural decrease?
When the death rate is higher than the birth rate; and the population decreases.
What are the physical causes of uneven development?
Being landlocked, climate related diseases and pests, extreme weather and lack of access to safe water.
What are the economic causes of uneven development?
HICs have power in trading, so they pay LICs little. Furthermore LICs often trade raw materials without processing them. This means HICs add value abroad.
What are the historical causes of uneven development?
Colonised countries may have suffered from economic leakage due to the leader of the colony reaping their profit. In the fight for independence, countries may have spent money on war.
How is disparity in wealth a consequence of uneven development?
The more developed a country is, it is more likely to have a lower percent of global population, but higher percent of global wealth.
How is disparity in health a consequence of uneven development?
Poorer countries invest less into healthcare. The main causes of death in LICs are infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, diarrhoea and tuberculosis. The main causes of death in HICs are chronic, degenerative diseases of affluence like cancer, heart disease, diabetes and dementia.
How is international migration a consequence of uneven development?
Less developed countries face low QoL and conflict. Economic migrants move voluntarily to seek a better life, such as a better paid job. Refugees are forced to move due to conflict or an extreme event.
