Things that can influence how much air people can breathe in?
exposure to contaminants, shape of airways, size of lungs and thoracic cavity, elevation and illness/obstruction
What do spirometry tests do?
Tests how well your lungs work and measures how much you inhale, exhale, and how quickly
What are spirometry tests used for?
identifying lung disease, checking severity of disease and to see if med work
IRV- Inspiratory reserve volume
volume of air that can be forced in when inhaling after a normal breath
ERV- Expiratory reserve volume
volume of air that can be forced out after a normal breath
TV- Tidal Volume
volume of air breathed in and out without effort
VC- Vital capacity
the total volume of air that can be exhaled after a maximum inhale
RV- Residual volume
volume of air remaining in lungs after maximum exhalation
why does there have to be some remaining air in the lungs?
without any air in the lungs it would be deflated and basically dead and unable to function

the volume of air breathed in 1 minute
eq: TV * breaths per minute (typically 12-18)
