What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis keeps the conditions in your body and cells at the right level
Why is homeostasis improtant?
Because your cells need the right conditions to work properly.
What does your body use for homeostasis?
Control systems
What do control systems do?
Keep your body temperature, blood glucose level and water level steady
Body temperature, blood glucose level and water levels are automatic control systems. What are automatic control systems?
Automatic control systems are control systems that you don't need to think about.
What do automatic control systems use to control the conditions in the body?
The nervous system or hormones
What are control systems made up of?
Receptors, Coordination centres and effectors
When the level of something (e.g. blood glucose) gets too high or too low, what does the control system do?
It brings the level back to normal
If the level is too high, what does the control system do?
Decreases the level
If the level is too low, what does the control system do?
Increases the level
How does the control system work?
-If the level of something changes a receptor detects a stimulus and sends information to the coordination centre.
-The coordination centre receives and processes the information and then organises a response.
-An effector produces a response.
-This returns the level to its optimum level.
