Refers to the character and atmosphere of a school.

-Encouraged & praised by teachers
-Emphasis on equal opportunities
Emphasis mainly on academic success
Define the Interactionist Perspective
Tend to use micro or small scale studies to explore the education system.
Define Labelling
Process of defining a person or group in a certain way, as a particular 'type' of person
Define 'stereotype'
generalized view of the features of a sociol group
Define 'halo effect'
When pupils become stereotyped either favourably or unfavourably.
Define the self-fufilling prophecy.
People acting in response to predictions made about them based on their behaviour.
Define banding
Grouping students together based on performance.
Define Streaming
In schools students are divided into groups with similar ability, which they stay in for all subjects.
Define setting
Where students are divided into groups with similar ability, whch they stay in for certain subjects.
Define the 'educational triage'
Refers to the way schools divide pupils into 3 groups.
1. Those likely to secure top grades,
2. Those who are likely to pass subjects and work towards top grades,
3. those with hardly any chance of securing top grades.
