Block 1 Introduction to Ecology lesson LIFE

Whats the difference between biotic and abiotic?

The biotic shows life characteristics, the abiotic doesnt.

What are characteristrics of living things?

Order
Regulation

Energy processing

Growth and development

Reproduction

Response to the environment

Evolutionary adaptation

What is expirimental research?

Manipulation of treatment variable (x), followed by observation of response variable (y). Experiment must be designed to control for other variables to establish causal relationship.

What is decriptive research?

Descriptive research provides a snapshot of some aspects of market enviroment at a specific point in time. No hint of a causal insight to be obtained from descriptive data.

What are the scopes of ecological research (from small to large)?

Induvidual-Population- Community-Ecosystem-Biome-Biosphere

Whats induvidual ecology?

It studies how an organism's structure, physiology, and (for animals) behavior meet environmental challenges.

What a population?

A Population is a group of induviduals of the same species living in an area.

Whats a community?

A community is a group of populations of different species in an area.

What an ecosystem?

An ecosystem is the community of organisms in an area and the physical factors with which they interact.

What a biome?

A biome is a mosaic of connected ecosystems.

Whats the biosphere?

The biosphere is the global ecosystem, the sum of all the planet's ecosystems.

Define weather and climate.

Weather: short-term state of the atmosphere.
Climate: long-term pattern of weather.

What are important zones within aquatic biomes?

Photic zone
Littoral zone

Benthic zone

Pelagic zone

What are some examples of aquatic biomes?

Lakes
Wetlands

Estuaries

Intertidal zone

coral reefs

Oceanic pelagic zone

Marine bentic zone

Streams and rivers

What's DNA and where is it located?

DNA is the "biological code" that determine traits. It is found within the nucleus of a cell.

What is evolution by natural selection?

Differential succes in reproduction results in certain gene variations being passed to the next generation in greater proportions.

What three types of adaptations exist within species?

Morphological
Behavioural

Physiological
