what is the nervous system?
network of specialised cells that communicates via electrical and chemical signals
what are the 2 subsystems of the NS?
Central NS and Peripheral NS
What is the CNS made of?
Brain and spinal cord
what does the brain do in the CNS?
processes a range of information and is split into 2 hemispheres.
what does the spinal cord do in the CNS
Sends information from the brain to the body
what is the PNS made up of?
nerves outside the CNS
What does the PNS do ?
transmits messages via neurons to and from the CNS
What can the PNS be divided into ?
Somatic NS and Autonomic NS
what does the SNS do?
controls muscle movement and recieves information firm sensory receptors, connecting the NS and senses
What does the ANS do?
controls vital finctions like digestion, breathing and heart rate. There are 2 branches of this system
what are the 2 branches if the ANS?
The sympathetic branch and The parasympathetic branch
what does the sympathetic branch do?
puts the body into the fight or flight response
what does the parasympathetic branch do?
takes the body out of the fight or flight respones and into rest and digest
