Instruments that have strings
Instruments with strings that are played by being stroked or by using a hammer.
Ex. Guitar, veena, sitaar, tanpura, etc.
String instruments that are played by using a bow.
ex. Sarangee, Violin, etc.
Instruments that are played by blowing air or inserting air pressure.
1. Instruments that have reeds (ex. harmonium)
2. Instruments that have holes to blow air into (ex. flute, clarinet, shankh, etc.)
Instruments that produce sound from wood or metal.
Ex. tambourine, manjiraa, etc.
Instruments that are played by draping stretched leather on top of the instrument. When you strike the leather skin or pelt, the instruments makes a sound.
ex. tabla, pakhavaj, jaltarang, dholak, dhol, damroo, etc.
Only creates one swar, so mainly used for keeping laya or adding percussion to vocal, instrumental, or dance performances.

(Avanaddha such as tabla, pakhavaj, and jaltarang can be used in solo performances sometimes)
