What is Tata- Vitata Vaadhya?

What is tata vaadhya?

Instruments with strings that are played by being stroked or by using a hammer.

Examples of tata vaadhya?

Ex. Guitar, veena, sitaar, tanpura, etc.

What is vitata vaadhya?

String instruments that are played by using a bow.

Examples of vitata vaadhya?

ex. Sarangee, Violin, etc.

What is sushir vaadhya?

Instruments that are played by blowing air or inserting air pressure.

What are the two types of sushir vaadhya?

1. Instruments that have reeds (ex. harmonium)
2. Instruments that have holes to blow air into (ex. flute, clarinet, shankh, etc.)

What is ghanavaadhya?

Instruments that produce sound from wood or metal.

Examples of ghanavaadhya?

Ex. tambourine, manjiraa, etc.

What is avanavaadhya or anaddha?

Instruments that are played by draping stretched leather on top of the instrument. When you strike the leather skin or pelt, the instruments makes a sound.

Ex. of avanaddha?

ex. tabla, pakhavaj, jaltarang, dholak, dhol, damroo, etc.

What is avanaddha used for mainly?

Only creates one swar, so mainly used for keeping laya or adding percussion to vocal, instrumental, or dance performances.

What is taalvaadya?

Percussion instruments

Which types of instruments are used in solo and accompaniment performances?

Sushir vaadhya and Tata-Vitata Vaadhya.

Which instruments are mainly used for accompaniment performances?

Ghanavaadya and Avanaddha or Aanaddha
(Avanaddha such as tabla, pakhavaj, and jaltarang can be used in solo performances sometimes)
