Devices: Similie and Symbolism
Solitary - adjective
This quote could be foreshadowing
Solitary implies being alone however solitary also implies it is a forced lonliness. Something is stopping scrooge to become like this
The oyster could be a symbol of capatalism. Oysters have a pearl inside of them. This could be scrooge himself - his true nature. However his belief in capatilism has cause his true nature to be encased leaving only a husk filled with negativity
The idea of the pearl also foreshadows an idea that scrooge has a chance of redemption meaning he will change.
Verb - forged
Symbolism - Chains
Small flashback
Linked to the gothic genre
"wear" Shows the idea that it is a warning for everyone but espeically scrooge. Scrooge is abble to see the chain weighing marley down, these are the fruit of his sins
The writer chose to use a chain to symbolise all the sins Marley commited while being alive. Chains are formed by links and each link could represent a sin committed
Forged implies that he created something. This shows Marleys acceptance of the fact he is the only one to blame for his condition. He is guilty.
Marley serves as a warning to scrooge to learn to change
Links to the gothic/horror genre as this it contains unnatural things such as marleys ghost wearing a massive chain. This is all done to scare the reader as it scared scrooge.
Devices - Pathetic fallacy, Juxtapostiton
Dirtier - Adjective
Symbolism - Snow
The snow in this quote symbolises the rich and the poor. The snow is decribed as smooth. This means its untouched beautiful and organised. This snow also sits upon the roof at the top. This perfect patch of snow represents the rich upperclassmen in a chritsmas carol. Most roofs are slanted meaning that the snow could look down upon the ground symbolising the rich looking down on the poor
The dirtier and discoloured snow on the ground that the perfect snow is looking down upon represents the poor lowerclass of a christmas carol
Pathetic fallacy is seen here as the writer uses the weather to show the vents and mood of the play
Juxtaposition is seen here as it is used to show the contrast between the rich and the poor
Device - Metaphor
Structure - Short sentences
Dickens is using children to prove his point in the play. Children represent the most vulnerable group in society however they are often ignored. Dickens uses this to represent the youth of the poor working class.
Ignorance - Refers to the fact that the rich are either oblivious to the poor conditions the poor have to face or they dont care enough about the poor
I - first person pronoun, zoom in
imperative quote, a command
the imperative quote connatates a command. Scrooge is commanding himself to change according to what the spirit shows. He is now taking accountability the way the spirits held him accountable and the way marley held himself accountable
The words shut out could link back to the oyster. At the beginning of the story scrooge was shut out by society by the shell of capatlism which represents the oyster. However now scrooge is rejecting the idea of capatlism and is not allowing himslef to be consumed by it. The shell has been smashed and the true nature of scrooge is starting to reveal himself.
it also reveals dickens message. This quotw is foreshadowing hope. If scrooge can change his way then so can the rest of the jacobean society.
Structure - forshadowing
Metaphor - life and actions
Verb - departed
This quoteis implying that no matter how old or young, rich or poor, strong or weak, its never too late to change. The spirits showed scrooge that if he continued on his path of the idea of capatalism then he will have a terrible ending. So scooge departs from this path and changes
Symbolism
Personification
Foreshadowing
The cold symbolises the cruel nature of scrooge. The evilness within scrooge was so strong that it reflected upon his face. The word froze could imly dead bodies. They are empty no life no energy no passion. Scrooge was like a dead man walking as there was no light within him.
Rule of three
The negative terminology used to describe scrooge is gone now being replaced with good. This juxtaposes the beginning of the story where he is described as solitary and has cold features. The word good emphasises his change and that he isnt amazing but is no longer bad signifying his redemption and improvement.
friend - was the ghost of christmas past which showed him his family members and the relationships he had with them.
He then shows scrooge how his relationship fell out with belle.
Master - was the ghost of christmas present where he showed the harsh conditions of bob cratchit and the cratchit family because of his maltreatment.
man - The repition of good was to tell us how scrooge had implemented it inot himself to carry himself in joy. Not only to people he knows but to everyone else
Idol - symbolic of worship
Another - shows change
The word Another that belle says to scrooge firstly can imply that she wants to be the only "idol" for scrooge. This goes against the patriarchal ideas of jacobean society. Men were not supposed to worship
The idol in question is money. Scrooge became a slave to his desire for money and status. This was the catalyst for the downfall of scrooge.
