The primary oocyte
Prophase 1
Prophase
First
The cell divides unequally, with most of the cellular material and organelles going to one cell. This cell is called the secondary oocyte. Only one set of chromosomes and little cytplasm goes to the other cell, the polar body, which later degenerates.
Metaphase 2
Ovulation
Meiosis 2 if fertilized
If fertilized, the cell continues through meiosis 2. It completes meiosis and produces a second polar body and the fertilized egg with all 46 chromosomes, half coming from the sperm.
