Imperialism is the act of conquering other lands not just by expanding territory, but by monopolizing their economy and resources. It can also include spreading views and religions to other areas, wiping out those that were previously established.
Because of imperialism many cultures were lost, destroyed, or overshadowed.
Imperialism was usually acted upon because of the beliefs that someone else’s way of life was less civilized and that they needed to be saved.
Nationalism is extreme loyalty to a nation, but not always the desire to expand its power.
The USA began emerging as a new imperialist power at the start of the 20th century.They wanted to expand in terms of commerce.
Britain was already the world’s leading power. They wanted to acquire more territory mostly because it would provide more raw materials. They had enough naval power to be successful with their colonization.
France did not have as much as a need for materials as Britain but wanted to hold more power. This led to many conflicts over territory between Britain and France.
Germany wanted to hold more power, but they also needed a warm water port. They were willing to challenge Britain and France over territories outside of Europe.
Russia needed a warm water port.
Japan was developing rapidly as an industrial superpower. They needed more raw materials. They also wanted to keep Asia free of European influence.
