micro test#2

Fluoride is

a salt of hydrofluoric acide and is stored primarily in minerlizing tissues such as bones and teeth

types of Systemic fluoride

water fluoridation

food

systemic fluoridation supplements

tablets

mouth rinses

drops

absorption of systemic fluoride

-absorbed rapidly by the stomach as hydrogen fluoride

- fluoride not absorbed by the stomach will be absorbed in the small intestine

- fluoride then enters the bloodstream with a max plasma levels being reached in about 30 min. --> most fluoride is absorbed within 1 hours

- 99% of fluoride in the body is located in mineralized tissue ( bones and teeth)

benefits of systemic fluoride

1. pre-eruptive: mineralization stage- F deposits after the ameloblasts form enamel matrix and wile mineralization occurs-F source is tissue and blood

2. maturation stage: F continues to deposit in surface enamel - F source in nutrient tissue fluids - highest F deposition

Fluoride in enamel -->Up take

Depends on the amount of available fluoride & the length of time that it is available

Hypo-mineralized enamel

absorbs fluoride in greater quantities than sound enamel

Demineralized enamel that has remineralized will

have a greater concentration of fuolride than sound enamel

the outer surface has

the highest concentration and the amount decreases toward the interior of the tooth

Fluoride level can be greater in exposed dentin than enamel

Higher concentration is at the pulpal/inner surface ( travels through the dentinal tubules toward the pulp

Fluoride in cementum

the level of fluoride in cementum is high and increses with age

demineralization is the

loss of minerals content from the teeth
