Science test

Weather

The day-to-day environmental conditions in a given place at a given time.

Climate

The average weather conditions over the time span of 30 years.

Heat capacity

A measure of the amount of thermal energy needed to raise the temperature of a substance.

Heat sink

Matter that absorbs thermal energy but does not need to change state or significantly increase in temperature.

Convection

The transfer of thermal energy from one part of a GMS or liquid to another.

Global warming

An increase in earth's average atmospheric temperature.

El Nino

A large current of warm water that forms in the Pacific ocean.

Climate change

Changes in longterm weather patterns are cause by natural events and human activity.

Flood plain.

An area of flat land that is flooded when a river overflows its banks.

Drought.

A prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall leading to a shortage of water.

Flood

an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines.

Soil compaction

When soil particles are pressed together, reducing pore space between them.

Basic human rights

The rights to which persons are inherently entitled to because they are human.

A friend says, "The climate is really rainy today!" How would you correct this statement? Why?

It would actually be, "The weather is really rainy today!" Because weather is used to refer to the day-to-day environmental conditions while climate is used to talk about the weather over the time span of 30+ Years.

How would the heat capacity of wet soil compare to dry soil? Explain.

Dry soils are much more easily heated/cooled than wet soils because wet soils heat capacity is higher.

How would global warming cause the water level in the Great Lakes to fall?

Because the heat is causing the water in the Great Lakes to evaporate and is evaporating faster than it can refill.
