PE- Applied Anatomy and Physiology(paper1)- Lever systems-(1.1.4)

what makes up a lever system?

fulcrum, effort, load and a rigid bar

What is the formation of a 1st class lever system?

fulcrum in the centre with effort and load either side

What is the formation of a Second class lever system?

load in the centre with the fulcrum and effort either side

What is the fromation of a 3rd class lever system

the effort is in the centre with the fulcrum and load either side

Example of a second class lever:

plantar flexion at the ankle (the only 2nd class lever system in the body)

Example of 1st class lever:

Headering a ball in football, elbow extension while doing a shot put.

Example of 3rd class lever system:

(everything else in the body) bicep curl, kneee flexion, shoulder circumcuction and hip abduction.

What is mechanical advantage?

when the effort arm is longer than the load arm meaning large loads can be lifted/moved with relatively little effort.

What is mechanical disadvantage?

when the load arm is longer than the effort arm meaning large effort is needed to move loads. However these movements can happen faster and with a larger range of movement.

What levers are mechanically advantaged?

1st class (sometimes) and 2nd class

What levers are mechanically disadvantaged?

1st class (sometimes) and 3rd class
