What is the blood?
A tissue that transports substances around the body and plays a role in the immune system
What substances are in the blood?
-Plasma
-Red blood cells
-White blood cells
-Platelets
What is plasma?
Liquid that bloods cells are suspended in (mostly water) contains dissolved substances e.g. glucose
What is the purpose of the platelets?
-involed in clotting open wounds to prevent infection
What are the red blood cells?
-Cell that has no nucleus
-Contains lots of haemoglobon protein
-Has biconcave shape ( large SA )
-Transports oxygen
What are the white blood cells?
-Defends the body from pathogens
-Two types:
-Phagocytes - engulf pathogens
-Lymphocytes - produce antibodies or antitoxins
