Compounds (Pre-IB SC 9)

Difference between ionic and covalent compounds?

Ionic compound = metal reacts w/non-metal(or a polyatomic ion)
Covalent compound: 2 nonmetals react with each other

What is a polyatomic ion?

A group of atoms that has a charge.

What is a binary ionic compound?

A compound consisting of one metal (cation) and one nonmetal (anion).

What are multi-valent metals?

Metals that can form 2 or more differenr positive ions with different ion charges.

When using the melting test on a compound, what kind of heat is used?

Moderate heat

After the melting test, if the compound did not melt it is ___________?

Ionic

After the crush test, if the compound turned into a gritty powder it is ______________?

Ionic

After the solubility test, if the compound did dissolve it is ____________?

Ionic

After the conductivity test, if the compound did conduct a current it is _________?

Ionic

After the crush test, if the compound became waxy and flexable it is _________?

Covalent

After the solubility test, if the compound did not dissolve in water it is _____________?

Covalent

After the melting test, if the compound did melt it is ___________?

Covalent

After the conductivity test, if the compound did not conduct a current it is ____________?

Covalent

What is the difference between an element and a compound?

An element is a pure substance which is composed of only one atom, and it cannot be broken down into simpler components. A compound is composed of 2 or more different types of elements, and can be broken down into a simpler substance(because it has more than one element.)

Difference between ionic and covalent bonds?

Ionic bonds: Forms when atoms are held together by the attraction between opposite charges. Atoms can gain or lose electrons to form ions.
Covalent bonds: Forms when atoms SHARE electrons to satisfy the Octet rule.

Ionic compounds exist as a solid in the form of an _______________.

Ionic lattice: Repeating pattern of positive and negative ions.

What are diatomic elements?

Pure elements that form molecules consisting of two of the same type of atoms bonded together covalently.

Name the diatomic elements.

iodine(I2), bromine(Br2), chlorine(Cl2), fluorine(F2), oxygen(O2), nitrogen(N2), hydrogen(H2)
