A persons subjective awareness

Define self-awareness
the first-hand experience of own thoughts and behaviour
Types of consciousness experiences?
visual perception, memory, body awareness, decision making
Define visual perception
the ability to be aware of your surroundings by interacting and noticing the environment
Define memory
the ability to absorb, retain,and apply new information
Define body awareness
the ability to feel sensations on your body unconsiciously and consciously
Define decision-making
The ability to make conscious or unconsious decisions
What are the types of awareness?
Unconscious, non-conscious process, unattended information, preconscious memory
Define unconscious
when you are unaware of known stimuli but they are able to affect your behavior
Define preconscious memory
When you don't remember certain memories until they are brought up to your attention
Define non-conscious process
A type of automatic bodily process that you are unaware of while you do other things
What is cortical blindness?
Occurs when you are completely unable to see, but you are able to sense external stimuli
What is damaged when you have cortical blindness?
the pre-frontal cortex
How can you study consciousness?
think-aloud protocols, experience-sampling methods
What is a think-aloud protocol?
When the participant describes and says all their steps, feelings and expected results during an experiment
What is a experience sampling method?
Where the participant is hooked to a device that would allow them to ask the participant to report any feelings, behaviours, or thoughts at a given time
Which type of function allows you to remember important aspects, but blocks out other external stimuli
Restrictive function
Which function allows you to becom hyperfocused on a specific topic for future purposes
selective storage functions
Which function allows you to set aside other desires when it conflicts with your own ethical or moral concerns?
Planning functions
What is the difference between wakefulness and awareness?
Between the both, wakefulness occurs when the body is able to move and to be awake, but awareness is when the mind is able to become conscious of the external environment and retain information
What happens when you're in a coma?
You are both unaware and unawake.
what happens when you are in a vegetative state?
occurs when your body is awake, but your mind is unaware
what happens when you lucid dream?
you yourself is aware of all the surroundings, but you are unawake
which disorder occurs when your body is awake and aware, but you are unable to move?
Locked-in syndrome
what is sleep?
sleep is when your body becomes unconscious and your mind becomes unaware for a period of time
define circadian rhythm
circadian rhythms occur during every 24 hr cycle and it affects mood, biological proccesses, and behaviour
define ultradian rhythm
occurs when the cycle is less than 24 hours
what is circadian rhythm regulated by?
entrainment and endogenous rhythms
define entrainment
entrainment occurs when your behavior becomes adapted due to external cues such as light
define endogenous rhythms
biological rhythms that are adapted from body independent cues. Ex. once it becomes dark, our body produces more melatonin
