• Jesus wanted to keep his identity secret because he was not the type of Messiah the Jews were expecting.
• The Jews expected a political warrior Messiah and Jesus was a peacetul and suffering Messiah.
• He did not want to attract a lot of unwanted attention early in his ministry - he wanted to complete his mission before being put to death. By keeping his identity a secret he was avoiding danger of early arrest.
• Jesus wanted to fulfil Scripture prophecy he was a suffering servant.
• He did not want to be seen as blasphemous - he didn't want to be portrayed as a threat to religious orthodoxy.
