A christmas Carol quotes and context

"Are there no prisons?"

(Stave 1)- Scrooge. Shows how much scrooge hates the poor wishes worst on them and wont help them. Rhetorical question shows extent Scrooge has this mindset seems common sense to him. "prisons" emphasises hate for working class he wants them locked up for being poor. Theme of poverty- victorian rich treat working class awful.

"I cannot afford to make idle people merry"

(Stave 1)- Scrooge. Shows how scrooge only cares about the value of money nothing else even happiness. this is shown by verb choices "afford" shows how he is fixated on money. the adjective "idle" shows he thinks poor people are poor as they are lazy which is untrue but popular victorian attitude.

"To Tiny Tim...he became a second father."

(Stave 5)- on about scrooge. shows how scrooge has become very caring and warm to the Cratchit family (especially Tiny Tim) and always willing to help them. Symbolism in this quote Tiny Tim represents the working class and how scrooge has become a charitable person. noun "father" shows how warm and loving a person scrooge has become. theme of redemption and change- message to reader they can change to be warmer to those in need.

"Like a child: yet not so like a child."

(stave 2)- on about ghost of christmas past.shows how the ghost represents everyone and the experiences everyone has as he cant be defined through age. done through juxtaposition. "child" connotes innocence and purity showing nature of ghost.

"Yo ho my boys! No more work tonight."

(stave 2)-Fezziwig. dialogue delivered in exhuberant way shown by use of exclamation mark showing character of fezziwig- happy boss who cares for his employees (opposite of Scrooge). possessive pronoun "my" has endearing connotations showing how Fezziwig cares for his employees. Example to upper class how they should be with their employees.

"Yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish."

(stave 3)- on about ignorance and want. powerful adjectives here help to show how weak and awful ignorance and want look. Ignorant and want are a metaphor for the effects of greed and miserlyness on humanity it makes it weaker. shown by adjective "meagre". links to ideas of social injustice saying it is the bane of humanity and ruins humankind.

Unwatched, unwept, uncared for."

(stave 4)- on about scrooge's grave. rule of 3 puts emphasis on how nobody cares now scrooge is dead and his grave is of poor quality. "unwept" shows how nobody has grieved scrooge now hes dead. Grave symbolic of legacy and message to upper class legacy is not based of how much money you make but how good a person you are.
