RS Incarnation, Crucifixion and Resurrection Flashcards

Explain two constrating beliefs about the Incarnation.

Jesus is God incarnate: he humbled himself to a human form and lived with humans, "while we were still sinners" (Romans 5:8). John 1:14 says, "The Word was made _____ and made his _______ among us." Jesus suffered and died as a man to redeem the sins of humanity.

Jesus was the prophecised Messiah: as stated in Isaiah 7:14, "The virgin will conceive and give to a son, and will call him _______." These were the words of Angel ______ to Mary, who was "pregnant throught the Holy Spirit" (Matt 1:18). The Immaculate Conception proves he is Son of God and the saviour of this world.

Adoptionism: Jesus was only human, conceived sexually and adopted by God.

Docetism: Jesus was only divine, his body and death an illusion to demonstrate God's omnibenevolence towards humanity.

Hypostatic Union: Jesus was fully human and fully divine. Jesus displays both divine power (calming of the storm and walking on water) and human mortality (weeping for Lazarus' death and tired after 40 days in the wilderness).

Explain two ways the Incarnation influences Christians today.

Salvation: Jesus is the Word made flesh, and he said in John 14:6, "I am the __ and the _____ and ____. No one comes to the Father except through me." So it was only by Jesus' sacrifice on the cross that we are purified of original sin and are able to go to the Kingdom of Heaven. So Christians are reassured that so long as they put their faith wholly in Jesus Christ, they will enter Heaven in the afterlife.

Omnibenevolence: John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that those who believe in him shall not _______, but have ______ ____." The Crucifixion was God's ultimate act of sacrificial love - offering us a chance of reconciliation even when we do not deserve it, "for all have fallen short of God's standard." Christians understand the extent of God's love for humanity and try to display that same humility and selflessness in their lives.

Explain two beliefs about the Crucifixion.

Atonement: (In the Old Testament, people offered animals as sacrifice to purify their iniquities. And) Since Romans 6:23 states, "For wages of sin is death," only Jesus, as a flawless and sin-free man, could take the penalty for our sin. (We no longer have to conduct animal sacrifice.) This shows his humility and selfless love for us.

Salvation: Jesus' blood washed away the sinsof humanity, giving believers an opportunity to restore a relationship with God. Romans 6:23, "but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord," highlights how salvation is a gift of God, not given because we deserve it. Christians also no longer fear death since Jesus has conquered it.

Explain two ways the Crucifixion influences Christians today.

The Crucifixion is a core event of Christianity that marks Jesus' victory over death. It shows God's omnibenevolence and mercy since Jesus' last words were, "Father, forgive them, for they not know what they are doing." So Christians learn to love unconditionally and show mercy to their trepassers just as Jesus did.

After Jesus, "breathed his last," the "veil was torn and the earth shook." This showed Jesus was the Son of God, as well as the prescence of God moving out of the altars and into the world. This marks the new world after Jesus's sacrifice, where people, Jew or Gentile can pray and repent outside of the synagogue. This can make Christians today realise how Jesus made it easier know God than before, and be inspired to follow him.

Explain two beliefs about the Resurrection of Jesus.

Afterlife: Jesus' victory over death showed Christians that death is not the end. "Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved," so Christians no longer fear death and instead they feel hopeful that their good works will come to fruition on the Day of Judgement.

The angel at the tomb told Mary Magdelene that, "he has risen," just as Jesus said he would do. This proves the power of good over evil and that Jesus is the Son of God. The resurrection is central to the core belief in the deity of Jesus Christ; would it there is no faith.

Explain two ways the Resurrection influences Christians today.

John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that those who believe in him shall not perish, but have eternal life." So Christians are reassured that they faith overcomes death and sin, and that they will be rewarded on the Day of Judgement despite facing judgement/persecution now.

Afterlife: Jesus said, "Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved," in Mark 16:16. So Christians feel compelled to enact the Great Commission and spread the good news of the gospel so that more people can have the gift of eternal life.
