Why was the Kansas-Nebraska Act controversial? What was popular sovereignty?
Act formalized Popular Sovereignty: allowed white residents in states to decide for themselves whether to allow slavery
BUT, Missouri compromise previously BANNED slavery above in remainder of the Louisiana Territory and axt was repealed because kansas and nebtaska were above that line
RESULT: Violence between proslavery and antislavery activists (Bleeding Kansas)

Replacement of slavery where land owner would provide some land for the sharecropper to farm and those crops would be "shared" with the landowner aka most of it given away
Not exactly slavery but there was a similar cycle of debt to land that the sharecropper didnt own

Gave Rutherford B. Hayes presidency in exchange for the end of reconstruction

Funding limitations: Northern states no longer wanted to pay taxes for the support of the Freedmans Bureau
