MIE542: Human Factors Integration (Before Test 1)

What is HFI? L2

Human Factors Integration (HFI) is the process adopted by a number of key industries to integrate human factors and
ergonomics into the systems engineering process.

HFI is a multidisciplinary effort to generate and compile information about human capabilities and limitations and apply that information to produce safe, comfortable, effective human performance.

What can you apply HFI principles to? L2

- Equipment
- Staff

- Systems

- Software

- Facilities

- Jobs

- Procedures

- Management

etc.

The Model of HFI:

Plan & Analysis
Design

Testing & Evaluation

In-Service

What is a part of Planning & Analysis for the HFI Model

Planning & Analysis:
- HFEPP

- OER

- FA

- TA

- Staffing

- Risk Analysis

What is part of Design for the HFI Model?

- HSI Design (Human Systems Integration)
- Training

- Procedures

What is part of T&E in the HFI Model?

- User Testing (mockups and prototypes)
- Human performance monitoring

- Certification and simulation

What is a part of In-Service for the HFI Model?

- Construction, commissioning, safety culture
- Human performance monitoring

- Mapping HFI to design processes (more in Lec 3)

What is the purpose of an HFI program plan? (5a)

The program plan should describe the HF considerations and plans that will be involved to ensure that the system is designed and evaluated according to estbalished human factors principles.

Things to be considered for planning an HFI program plan (5a):

- Level of effort required
- Key interfaces

- Organization

- Technical elements/activities

- Resolution of HFI issues

What are the contents of an HFI Plan?

- Introduction (purpose and scope)
- Strategy (things to consider: objectives, goals, requirements, approach, etc.)

- Organization (point of contact, resources, relationships)

- Program background (considerations for the design: scheduling, end users, what features do you want)

- HF Risks and Opportunities (potential risks, problems)

- HF Tasks (scheduling, issue tracking, test and evaluation)

- Tailor/Update plan (review, revise, post findings)

- Additional info (references, appendices)

What is included in an HFI program plan?

1. Purpose of HFI planning and the plan
2. Items to be considered during planning

3. Contents of HFI plan

4. Defining the level of HFE effort required

How do you define the level of HFE effort required?

You can use a screening process to determine which aspects of the design activity should include human factors consideration.
If minor effort needed: Internal designers can follow design guidelines.

If major effort: HF specialists may be involved and a complete analysis of everything discussed may be conducted.
