Human Factors Integration (HFI) is the process adopted by a number of key industries to integrate human factors and
ergonomics into the systems engineering process.
HFI is a multidisciplinary effort to generate and compile information about human capabilities and limitations and apply that information to produce safe, comfortable, effective human performance.

The program plan should describe the HF considerations and plans that will be involved to ensure that the system is designed and evaluated according to estbalished human factors principles.
- Level of effort required
- Key interfaces
- Organization
- Technical elements/activities
- Resolution of HFI issues
- Introduction (purpose and scope)
- Strategy (things to consider: objectives, goals, requirements, approach, etc.)
- Organization (point of contact, resources, relationships)
- Program background (considerations for the design: scheduling, end users, what features do you want)
- HF Risks and Opportunities (potential risks, problems)
- HF Tasks (scheduling, issue tracking, test and evaluation)
- Tailor/Update plan (review, revise, post findings)
- Additional info (references, appendices)
1. Purpose of HFI planning and the plan
2. Items to be considered during planning
3. Contents of HFI plan
4. Defining the level of HFE effort required
You can use a screening process to determine which aspects of the design activity should include human factors consideration.
If minor effort needed: Internal designers can follow design guidelines.
If major effort: HF specialists may be involved and a complete analysis of everything discussed may be conducted.
