CHAPTER 1: PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING AND ASSESSMENT
GATHERING and INTEGRATION of psychology-related
data for the purpose of making a psychological EVALUATION that is accomplished through the use of
tools such as TEST, INTERVIEW, CASE STUDIES, behavioral observation, and specially designedapparatuses
and measurement procedures.
Psychological Assessment
process of MEASURING
psychology-related variables by means of devices or procedures designed to obtain a SAMPLE of
BEHAVIOR.
Example: An IQ test measures a person's cognitive abilities through a series of questions.
Psychological Testing
the use of tests and other tools to evaluate
ABILITIES and SKILLS relevant to SUCCESS or FAILURE in a SCHOOL or pre-school context. INTELLIGENCE TESTS,
ACHIEVEMENT TESTS, and READING COMPREHENSION TESTS
Educational Assessment
The process of this is INDIVIDUALIZED. It focuses on how an individual PROCESSES rather than simply the results of that processing.
Assessment
The objective of this is to ANSWER a REFERRAL QUESTION, SOLVE a PROBLEM, or arrive at a decision through the use of tools of evaluation.
Assessment
The ASSESSOR is key to the process of selecting tests and/or
other tools of evaluation as well as in drawing conclusions
from the entire evaluation.
Assessment
It requires an EDUCATED SELECTION of tools of
evaluation, skill in evaluation, and thoughtful organization
and integration of data.
Assessment
The process of this may be conducted INDIVIDUALLY or in GROUPS. After test administration, the tester adds up “the number of correct answers or the number of certain types of
responses . . . with little if any regard for the how or mechanics of such content”
Testing
The objective is to obtain some GAUGE, usually NUMERICAL in nature, with regard to an ability or attribute.
Testing
The TESTER is NOT key to the process; one tester may be
substituted for another tester without appreciably
affecting the evaluation.
Testing
it requires TECHNICIAN-LIKE SKILLS in administering and
scoring a test as well as in interpreting a test result.
Testing
This yields a TEST SCORE or series of test scores.
Testing
is when we use tools or methods to evaluate a person's mental or psychological state as it was at some time in the PAST.
example: Imagine trying to figure out how someone felt about a stressful event 10 years ago. You’d need to rely on their memories or old records, but both might not be completely accurate.
Retrospective Assessment
when psychologists evaluate someone’s mental state WITHOUT being PHYSICALLY CLOSE TO THEM. They use tools like ONLINE TESTS, VIDEO CALLS.
Example: A therapist might assess a patient’s anxiety by having them take an online survey and then discussing the results over a video call.
Remote Assessment
refers to the “IN THE MOMENT” evaluation of specific problems and related cognitive and behavioral variables at the EXACT TIME and PLACE that they occur. This is used to address issues like PTSD, smoking, chronic pain in children, and ADHD symptoms by CSPTURING REAL-TIME DATA.
Example: A person with PTSD might record their feelings right when they experience anxiety during the day, helping their therapist understand and address their triggers.
Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA)
the assessor and assessee may work as “partners” from initial contact
through final feedback
Example: During the assessment, the assessor might ask, “What do you hope to learn from this evaluation?” and involve the person in discussing and understanding the results.
Collaborative Psychological Assessment
the assessment is designed to have its INTENDED BENEFITS at the end of
the process: The examiner explains the results, summarizes the case conceptualization, and shares
a list of recommendations designed to help the examinee.
Example: In this approach, the assessor might discuss findings and therapeutic insights with the person during the assessment to help them understand and address their issues in real-time.
Therapeutic Psychological Assessment
• refers to an INTERACTIVE approach to psychological assessment that usually follows a model of (1)EVALUATION, (2) INTERVENTION of some sort, and (3) EVALUATION.
• if the intervention is EFFECTIVE and SUFFICIENT
• is most typically employed in EDUCATIONAL settings, although it may be employed in correctional, corporate, neuropsychological, clinical, and most any other setting as well.
Example: A teacher might test a student’s reading skills, then give extra help, and later re-test to see how much the student has improved.
Dynamic Assessment
Is a process of QUANTIFYING the amount or NUMBER of a particular OCCURRENCE of event, situation, phenomenon, object, or person
Example: if you're measuring someone's stress level, you might use a scale from 1 to 10 to see how stressed they are.
Psychological Measurement
The process of JUDGING the WORTH of any occurrence of event, situation, phenomenon, object, or person which concludes with a particular decision.
Example: A psychologist might evaluate a student's behavior to decide if they need extra support in school.
Psychological Evaluation
Process of Assessment:
Know the sources of your referral such as teacher, guidance counselor, judge, psychologist
1 Source of Referral
Process of Assessment
Clarify the reasons of your client's referral
2 Meet up with client

preparation and selection of tools to be used for assessment.
3 Preparation/ Selection of tools

COLLECTION and GATHERING of information using appropriate tools for assessment
4 Formal assessment
