cultural change
police prioritisation this can be good but violent crime that don't get recorded because the victima is sarced just adds to the dark figure of crime.
what is decriminalisation
the lessening of criminal penalties for a certain act.
when crimes go unreported it might make the police and lawmakers believe they should lesson the penalites associated with that crime becuase people aren't as concerned about it.
what is legal change
lack of reporting can lead to the law being changed.
changin the law so that something that was once a criminal offence is no longer illegal. crimes may go unreported for a long time because social norms change over time.
what is police prioritisation
the police might decide to place their resources into crime swhich appear more prevvalent if they have been reported a lot more. so people should get the help they need.
if people are not reporting crime, then serious and violent crime might not get prioritiesed as it appears they aren't as common. it's just conributing to the dark figure of rime. police can only deal with crime and act effectivly if they know what is actually happening.
what is procedural change
this refers to changes in the way the police and criminal justice system operate. so people not reporting crimes in the past has lead to the police devising new ways for crime to be reported.
the ripple effect
not reporting the crime might mean that a situation grows and becomes worse.
the ripple effect - the 'ripple effect' describes how the impact of a crime can spread beyond the immediate victim throughour his/her family, friends and the community.
crime goes unrecorded
this involves crime that are reported to the olice but they aren't recoreded as an offence/statistic. underreporting means the police are unaware of teh ture extent of crime and can't utilise their resouces effectivel if they don't know exactly where they are needed. the public also won't have accurate information about criminal activity.
cultural consequences
social norms (what is viewed as ok) vary between different cultues so some crimes may not be reported if people are unaware that a crime has been committed be ause in their country it's ok. because of cultural differences, this can make it difficult for some people to konw what actually needs reporting
cultural change (and broken windows theory)
when things aren't reported it can make communities think that behaviour is a normal thing. it might normalise the ciminal behaviour.
