he wishes for the clothe of heaven

Explains the three parts of the poem and what each entails.

Th thre 'part' of the poem convey as story a plea from a man in love. In the first part of the story he talks about hypotheticals. He shows that if he were a rich man he would gather all the treasures and lay them under his lovers feet. (This is used to represnt how he would sacrifice all his belongings for her love.) The second part - he expresses his regret that he cannot give theses gifts because he is poor, Instead hhe can only offer his dreams. Part 3- He presents his dreams with humility ad vunerability pleading with his lover to treat them carefully.

What does the poet wish he could give his beloved ?

The treasures of heaven- the most precious things, trophies and trinketss but he can't , this wish is futile.

Discuss the effectiveness of repetition in this poem. Qoute and discuss two examples.

Reinforces vulnerability. It emphasises the man's devotion. The idea of "dreams" is repeated, this is all he has being a poor man. He is willing to sacrfifice his only belongings and his identity for her affection. Making his love more precious than the treasures becaus its rare and sacrificial. The idea 'feet' are also repeated in the first 5 lines. This repetition creates rythm makes the plea heartful and almost like a song or ptayer.

Identify the refrain and discuss its effectiveness. Refer to the attitude of the poet towards his beloved.

The refrain adds to the musicallty. The musicality of the poem, makes it read of like a dream, or a thought. It makes the mood intimate and genuine, the poem itself functions as a diary entry or a conversation between him and his lover. It is effective as it shows the seriousnness and devotion that man has he is convveying what he is willing to give for her and all he asks of his lover is to treat his feelings carefully as they are all he has and is afraid that his heart will break. His attituude towards his beloved is sincere, sacrificial and honest.

Discuss the change in tone that occurs between line 5 and 6.

Line 5's tone is hopeful and generous and shifts towards humility and sincerety.

Discuss the 'message' of the poem in no more than 4 sentences.

The message of the poem is love is not only shown in the materialistic . But love is shown in offering all you have even if all you have is just yourself to offer as this person's refuge and footpath despite the risk. It is to sacrifice yourself for love but this serves dangerous as your lover can do whatever they want with that love.
