What are stem cells
Undifferenciated cells that can produce different cell types through differentiation
What are the different types of stem cells?
-Embryonic stem cells
-Adult stem cells
-Plant stem cells
What can embryonic stem cells differenciate into?
Nearly any type of animal cell
What can adult stem cells differ eciate into?
Into some types of aninal cells e.g. blood cells
What can plant stem cells differenciate into?
Any type of plant cell
Where are plant stem cells found?
In the meristem
What is therpeutic cloning?
A process in which we can produce embryonic stem cells that are generically identical to the patient
What happens in the proccess of therapeutic cloning?
1-The nucleus of a fertilised embryo is removed
2-The nucleus of the patients body cell is removed and inserted into the fertilised embryo
3-This replicates via mitosis to create a ball of embryonic stem cells genetically identical to the patient
What are the ethical issues with therapeutic cloning?
-Lack of consent of embryo as a potential life
-Unused embryos will be destroyed
-Risk of viral infection transfer or cancer
