A type of Internet connection
in which the computer or other device is

connected to the Internet continually.

direct connection

A type of Internet search in which categories are selected to locate information on the Internet.

directory search

The time it takes to locate and
read data from (or position and write data to) a

storage medium.

disk access time

Memory used in conjunction with
a magnetic hard drive to improve system

performance.

disk cache

An output device that contains a
viewing screen.

display device

A display device built into a
notebook computer, netbook, UMPC, or other

device.

display screen

A learning environment in which
the student is physically located away from

the instructor and other students; commonly,

instruction and communications take place via

the Web.

distance learning

A text-based Internet address used
to uniquely identify a computer on the Internet.

domain name

An act of sabotage that attempts to flood a network server or a Web server with so much activity that it is unable to function.
