nucleic acids

two types of nucleic acids

DNA and RNA

the three components covenltly bonded together

a phosphate group
a sugar with 5 carbon atoms

a nitrogen base

DNA

contains genetic information

RNA

the messanger

Key features of DNA

double stranded
contains deoxyibose

contains A G T and C

located in the nucleus

made through replacation

key features of RNA

single stranded
contains ribose

contains A G U and C

can be in the nucleus or cytoplasm

mRNA is made through the process of transcription

Nitrogenous bases for DNA

cytosine and guanine
adenine and thymine

nitrogenous bases of RNA

cytosine and guanine
adenine and uracil

how are DNA and RNA put together

a double helix and when unwound looks like a ladder
the sides of the ladder are made up of alternating phosphate and sugar molecules

the rungs are the nitrogenous bases held togerther by hydrogen bonds
