What are the the coronary arteries?
The arteries transport blood the the heart muscle itself
What is the fatty build up in arteries called?
Plaque
What happens if arteries become blocked by plaque?
Blood flow is reduced so less oxygen and glucose reaches the heart muscle
What happens if the heart if the heart muscle cant recieve enough O2 and glucose?
Heart muscle cant respire so it stops contracting, and this can cause a heart attack
What risk factors of coronary heart disease?
-Poor diet
-Lack of exercise
-High blood pressure
-High cholesterol
-Obesity
What are the treatments for coronary heart disease and what do they do?
-Statins:
-Drugs that lower cholesterol
-Preventative, cannot reduce build up that is already there
-Stents:
-Metal mesh used to widen narrowed arteries to increase blood flow
If serious damage causes heart failure, then heart transplant, bypass, or artifical heart
