Formalism
Emphasizes the importance of the author's life and background into account when analyzing a text. It focuses on the life and background of the writer/artist and connects them to the subject of your review or critic.
Biographical Criticism
It involves understanding the subject by using an analysis of the social, cultural, and intellectual context surrounding the work of art. Posits that every literary work is the product of its time and its world. It focuses on the era and significant events that happened
during the time the text/movie/book/art/poem was produced.
Historical Criticism
It examines how sexual identity influences the creation and reception of the subject. Feminist critics carefully examine how the images of men and women reflect or reject the social forces that have historically kept the sexes from achieving total equality.
Gender Criticism
This focuses on the human being’s unconscious mind, regrets, fears, hidden desires, sexuality, and repression. It involves analysis of three (3) elements: (1) it
investigates the creative process of the artist; (2) what is the nature or literary genius; and (3)
how does it relate to normal mental functions?
Psychological Criticism
Emphasizes how power, politics, and money play a role in literary texts and among literary societies and characters. It focuses on how class, power, race, and economic status affect the content and theme of a certain work.
Marxist Criticism
Emphasizes that the meaning of a text is dependent upon the reader's response to it. It focuses on the meaning you create while reading a text, watching a
movie, or looking at a certain object. It focuses on your personal connection with and understanding of the subject of your review.
