a symbol that is reconginized within a specific cultural group or subculture group : poppy, maple leaf

universal symbol

a symbol that is recognized world globally and nationally; red cross

religious symbols

a symbol that is recongized and has deep religious meaning for specific religious cultures; crucifix, water

symbols commonly used in religious rituals and practices* catholic or other

characters of symbols

-symbols may have more than one meaning
-symbols have certain meanings associated with them by their very nature

practical action

actuons are performed only for specific practical purposes and do not have a deeper meaning

actions that carry a deeper meaning and help us to show our beleifs or values (things we care about)

ancient rituals

a way to communicate with the spiritual world- often the israelites sacrificed lambs or other animals to give thanks to god

ritual worship

an attempt to get in touch with the spiritual world to put oneself in touch with god

early christian rituals

christians woukd gather for meals, break bread and share the cup as jesus had instructed. the practice of laying on of hand symbolizes the apostles expereince of receiving the holy spirit at pentecost

eight characteristics of a ritual

-involve gestures with meaning (holding up the body of christ, making sign of the cross)
-are often repeated (visiting a grave each year on the anniversary of a loved ones death)

-they can become celebrations that break routine (parties, prayer opening, and closing ceremonies of Olympic Games)

-usually connected to important events in peoples lives (a first, anniverseries, graduation

-include important words that support the actions (a toast, swinging happy birthday)

-link people to their past (canada day fireworks)

-rituald involve community (baby shower, funeral)

-need participation (cheering on a team, beinf present)

vocation

-A call from God and anyone who has felt God knows that the process is anything but simple
-The first and most important calls from God is called to be the universal called holiness

what are the 3 sacraments of initiation

The three sacraments of initiation are baptism, Eucharist and confirmation. They are welcoming sacraments because through the sacraments a person can fully enter the church.

baptism

A lifelong journey of commitment in discipleship, a welcoming ceremony into the church, you can be baptized as an infant or adult. Civil are water white garment, lighted candle oil and can cannot be repeated.

eucharist

also known as communion is a sacrificing a meal, during the sacrament we receive Christ body and blood in our nourished spiritually and brought closer to god, most important sacrament in the Catholic faith, most important part of symbols bread and it's the only sacrament of initiation that can be repeated

confirmation

sacrament of commitment in a deepening of baptismal gifts most often associated with the gifts of the Holy Spirit symbols are laying on a hands, annoiting and sealing with christ cannot be repeated

marriage

A public sign that a person is giving themselves totally to the person that they are marrying, a public statement about God the loving union of husband and wife, speaks of God's values symbols are rings, vowels, and consummation can be repeated

reconcilation
