Education Revision (THEORIES)
Functionalist view on education
It has key functions in society, transmitting norms and values, social integration and social control.
Durkheim (Functionalism)
We have social solidarity, school gives us a shared sense of identity and prepares us for socialising and work in later society.
Parsons (Functionalism)
Education is a bridge into society from family, secondary socialisation. Adapt to wider world.
Marxism view on education
Roles of education - prepares children for world of work, passes on ruling class ideology and capitalism, and legitimises inequality.
Althusser (Marxism)
Education is a part of the "Ideological state apperatus", passing on belief that society is fair when it isnt, legitimising inequality.
Bowles and Gintis (Marxism)
Pupils accept hierarchy at school because there will be one at work. Motivated by grades to do boring work, workers are motivated by money to do boring work.
Interactionism view of education
Education focuses on the interactions between pupils and teachers, labelling for example and all relationships that happen in school.
Becker (Interactionalist)
Labelling theory. Self fulfilling prophecy.
Rosenthal and Jackobson (Interactionalism)
Pygmalion effect - teachers expectations effect pupils performance.
The New Right view on education
Education prepares children for the world of work and skills needed in the workplace. However, they believe that it is failing to do so.
Chubb and Moe (New Right)
Found that education isnt meritocratic because low income students were unable to succeed. Used parental surveys, statistics and case studies.
Feminist view on education
Education transmits norms and values which are patriarchal.
Three types of feminist views
Liberal - socialised into gender roles. Radical - reinforces patriarchal ideology and oppression. Marx Fem - socialised into roles, women are oppressed economically and culturally, values of capitalism.
Postmodernist view on education
Education isnt just for knowledge transmission, but rather is for dominant ideologies and power structures are reinforced.
Fordism (Post Modernism)
System of mass production where all workers of Ford company only knew how to make one part of car making. They could never start their own business.
Post-Fordism (Post Modernism)
Growth of production methods, flexible production, individualisation of methods, distinct market segments.
Globalisation and education (Post Modernism)
Interconnectedness between societies worldwide - diversity, culture, change of education. Technology - ICT, Economic - TNCs and trade.
