Prosocial & antisocial behavior

Factors involved in initial attraction

1. Familiarity
2. Similarity

3. Physical attractiveness

4. Reciprocity

What is social exchange theory

- A relationship as a cost benefit calculation
- How people feel about their relationships will depend on their perceptions of rewards, costs and comparison level

Triangular theory of love

Intimacy & passion = romantic love (start of relationship)
Intimacy & commitment = companionate love (been together for a while and are committed to one another)

Intimacy & passion & commitment = consummate love (if passion is lost it becomes companionate love

Bystander effect

- The greater the number of people who witness a crime, the less likely any one of them is to help
- Diffusion of responsibility: Feeling less responsible because other people are able to help

Frustration aggression hyposthesis

- Frustration yields discomfort and makes us more prone to aggression
- When children were shown toys behind a glass wall, they became frustrated. When they were finally able to play, it was destructive play rather than joyful play from children who were able to play with the toys from the start

Social learning theory

We learn to be aggressive by observing aggression in others

What are the 3 different types of prejudice

- Explicit prejudice - when someone openly tells you they dislike groups of people
- Symbolic prejudice - expression of prejudice through prejudicial ideas or policies

- implicit prejudice - a negative attitude, of which one is not consciously aware, against a specific social group.

Scapegoating theory of prejudice

- Prejudice is the result of displaced aggression
- We place aggression on powerless groups in society when frustrated

- It is easier to blame a smaller group of people than a big corporate group of people
