Essenes
secluded group, lived on their own small viliages and belived the end of the world was coming
Samaritans
rejected prophets and writngs and only belived in the torah
Mitzvah
- a commandment from God that gives people direction to live ethically while honouring God- act of performing a good deed
Kashrut
- Kosher (fit for consumptions), no pork, not meat and dairy together
Shabbat
Sabbath, day of rest (friday before sunset to saturday nightfall), Shabbat services; several different synagogue services (10 men are needed for a minyan)
Mishnah
interpretation of the law (early rabbinic teaching on how to live life)
Talmud
rabbinic teachings which came later (medieval period)
Midrash
early interpretation and commentary of the bible which looks at solving puzzling situations
