WOUND

Types of wounds (medical classification)

-Closed wound
-open wound

- there is no breach in the continuity of the skin or mucous membrane

Closed wound

Syn. Contusion, Ecchymosis
Defn. "escape of blood from ruptured small vessels (vein, capillaries, arterioles) into the

surrounding tissues" The resulting discolouration is seen through the overlying intact skin. Due to blunt force trauma.

Bruise

- there is breach in the continuity of the skin or mucous membrane

Open wound

Syn. Scratch, Graze
Defn. " a portion of the body surface from which the skin or mucous membrane has been crushed or removed by rubbing"

A superficial injury, not involving the full thickness of the skin, i.e. confined to

epidermis/dermis.

Abrasion

Defn. Full thickness tearing of skin or tissue due to stretching and crushing by blunt force
Characteristics: Ragged wound edges

Lacerated wounds

Defn. Clean division of the full thickness of skin (or other tissue) by a sharp-edged
instrument.

Characteristics: Clean cut wound edges.

Incised wound is LONGER THAN IT IS DEEP.

Incised wounds

Defn. is "a small hole made with a sharp pointed instrument"
ITS DEPTH EXCEEDS ITS LENGTH on the body surface.

Puncture Wounds

It is produced by the penetration of sharp-pointed and sharp edged instrument like knife, saber, dagger, scissors. As a general rule, like an incised wound, the edges are clean cut, regular and distinct.

Stab wound

involve the forcible separation or tearing of tissue from the victim’s body. are commonly caused by animal bites and accidents involving motor vehicle, heavy machinery, guns and explosives.

Avulsions

Types of wound (As regards to the Depth of the Wound)

-penetrating
-perforating

– When the wound involves only the layers of the skin.

Superficial

– When the wound involves the inner structure beyond the layers of the skin.

Deep

– one in which the wounding agent enters the body but did not come out or mere piercing of a solid organ or tissue of the body.
– Wound where the dimension of depth and direction is an important factor in its description. It involves the skin or mucous surface and the deeper underlying tissues or organs caused directly by the wounding instrument. Punctured, stab and gunshot wounds usually belong to this type of wound.”

Penetrating

– When the wounding agent produces communication between the inner and outer portion of the hollow organs. It may also mean piercing or traversing completely a particular part of the body causing communication between the points of entry and exit of the instrument or substance producing it.

Perforating

-a large and deep often injured the underlying bone and imply the utilization of extreme
- a typical trap or hacking wound will have an incise appearance on the skin surface however it is deeper and margin are less clean and regular

- increase weight and thickness of the blade

- decrease sharpness of the blade

Chop and hack wound

- the loss of a distinct body parts such as a limb, finger, toe, ear. often very severe with protuse bleeding

Amputation

- the total separation of the head
