petroleum

Energy from nuclear power plant comes from nuclear ...

fission

Coal exists in what state of matter?

solid

Petroleum exists in what state of matter?

liquid

what are some examples of products made from petroleum?

plastic coke bottle, asphalt, lipstick, motor oil, gasoline, jet fuel

What is an example of product that is not considered a source of nuclear waste?

products of coal-burning plants

Nuclear wastes must be disposed of carefully so that .... will not leak into the environment

Radiation

... has uses other than energy, such as plastics and lubricants

Petroleum

In a nuclear reactor, the actual fission of the radioactive fuel occurs in the part of the reactor called the ...

Core

The most common radioactive fuel that is used in nuclear reactors is ...

U-235

What is the fuction of the control rods in a nuclear reactor?

The control rods are used to control the power of the reactor by controlling the nuclear reaction. The control rod will absorb neutrons preventing the neutrons from continuing the fission chain reaction

How is the used fuel from the nuclear reactor stored?

When fuel comes out of the reactor it is considered high level waste and stored in spent fuel pools. After being in the spent fuel pool for 10-20 yrs, the used fuels then moved to dry cask storage.

Identify the energy transformations that take place from the time a Uranium atom is split until electricity is produced?

NE- TE- ME- EE

Describe the 5 stages in the production of electrical energy at a fossil fuel-burning power plant

1. CPE is converted to TE through burnig of fossil fuel
2. TE heats water and products steam

3. Steam spins the turbine

4. The ME of the spinning turbine spin a generator

5. The generator generates an electric current through electromagnetic induction

Why are fossil fuels considered a non-renewable resource?

Fossil fuels are being considered faster than they can be repenished by natural processes

Why is nuclear fusion not currently used as an energy source on Earth?

It has been done in a lab, but right now it is not controllable because of the high temperatures

The information on a smoke detector says that it shoud be returned to the manufacturer and not thrown away in the trash can. Why is this so ?

A radioactive, Americium, is used in smoke dectectors. Radioactive waste needs to be disposed of properly to protect people and the environment
